Ashanga
Yoga
This
ancient system of yoga discovered in the 1930's by the late Sri T
Krishnamacharya and his disciple Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, involves a
series of set postures involved in rhythm with the breath in a flowing
sequence (vinyasa). There are six series in all.
The first, and most commonly practiced, is known as the primary
series. This method of yoga is a flowing art; a science in
the way of life. Be prepared to sweat.
-
Vinyasa
Flow
Inspired
by Ashtanga Yoga, this is a slower form of flowing yoga concentrating
on physical alignment and awareness of breath. Recommended for those
wishing to deepen their understanding of yoga asanas, while still being
challenging.
- Restorative
Relax, renew
and restore the mind, body and soul. A therapeutic practice where
‘active relaxation’ occurs. The body is supported with props so you can
practice without strain. By holding and relaxing into the 'restful'
postures for longer, we can release emotional and physical tension from
the body. When we are constantly pushing our physical and mental
limits, we over stimulate our sympathetic nervous system which brings
stress and tension to our body resulting in potential health problems.
This practice calms the nervous system by stimulating the
Parasympathetic Nervous System which produces a 'relaxation response'
in the body. It teaches us to slow down, surrender and connect with
stillness again. Restorative yoga can help bring equilibrium back to
the mind, body and soul by balancing the Prana (masculine energy) and
Apana (feminine energy) within the body. The class includes stretches
to help open those tight areas of the body. Suitable for all.
- Hatha Vinyasa with Yoga Nidra
Begins with
Hatha Vinyasa in a gentle flow to stretch and release tension from the
body; and encourage physical stillness for yoga nidra.
Yoga Nidra is an ancient yogic meditation technique from the Tantric
yoga path of meditative inquiry which leads to inner freedom. It was
reintroduced by Parmahansa Satyananda Saraswati, founder of the Bihar
School of Yoga. This practice is part of the Raja path of yoga which
includes the Eight Limbs of Yoga as classified by Patanjali. It
encourages pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses) and dharana
(concentration). It works on the physical, energetic, emotional, and
cognitive layers of the body to take you to a place of deep relaxation
where you can recharge, rejuvenate and awaken higher consciousness.
Suitable for all however, a basic understanding of yoga postures is
recommended.
